Help CAG Eliminate Serious Bacterial Infections

Infectious diseases lead to 4.5 million deaths each year in children under 14 years of age. Most of these deaths are due to diarrhea and respiratory infections such as pneumonia – the number one killer of children in the developing world.

CAG researchers recently identified several gene mutations that increase vulnerability to S. pneumonia, the most common cause of pneumonia in young children. Having identified genetic vulnerabilities to S. pneumonia, we are initiating a series of innovative projects to target relevant gene networks. These findings may provide new vaccines and therapies, but must first be validated in a larger cohort of children.

Ultimately, we hope to eliminate this serious bacterial infection, which will represent a massive step toward eradicating the most common infectious diseases worldwide.

CAG's model for tackling S. pneumonia is the rotavirus vaccine, which was discovered by CHOP scientists and is saving hundreds of thousands of lives every year.
